Overview
Migrating a federal student loan servicer’s infrastructure from a physical data center to AWS using Terraform infrastructure-as-code. The project redesigned how a 150-person engineering organization thinks about infrastructure, cost, and resilience under FedRAMP and SOC 2 compliance requirements.
The work spanned roughly 30 internal products, which meant the real problem was organizational as much as technical: a data-center mindset — fixed capacity, capex budgeting, change through tickets — had to become a cloud operating model with infrastructure expressed as reviewable code, cost treated as a continuously managed variable, and resilience designed in rather than bolted on. I supported the migration itself, managed the cost model through the transition, and helped reshape how the engineering organization reasoned about infrastructure decisions under heavy compliance and institutional constraints.
Specific details are under NDA, but the shape of the engagement is the useful marker: enterprise cloud migration where the compliance envelope is strict, the organization is large, and the migration only succeeds if the people — not just the workloads — make the move.
